Silicon Beach (and Freshview) gets another plug

Posted by David Greiner on November 13, 2007 5:23 PM

We just came across a nice mention of Freshview in the IT Innovations section of the Australian Financial Review today. Unfortunately, we can't send you to the article because it's behind a paywall, but there was one quote in particular I wanted to mention.

...the boom in internet companies and the growth of Sydney's Silicon Beach in Cronulla are being driven by changes in the internet itself.

For those of you not familiar with Sydney geography, Cronulla is a small coastal suburb of Sydney where I live and is a few short minutes from the Freshview office. The fact that the largest financial publication in the country just labelled this area as Silicon Beach is a great moment for the Cronulla tech community, but I'm afraid we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves.

You see, I don't know of any other web-based software companies in Cronulla. Heck, none of the other company's in our building even know what it is that we actually do. I've tried to explain it, trust me. Of course, if you expand Silicon Beach to refer to Sydney in general, maybe you're getting somewhere. After just coming back from a week in Silicon Valley myself (and experiencing my first earthquake), I think I'll stick to the beach version any day.

One quick correction from the article itself. We charge 1 cent per email, not 5 cents. Also the total cost for the WWF-Australia campaign would be $55, not $555.

Hey David - that's really bloody annoying! I can't believe they didn't fact check the first article, let alone the second!!! So sorry I didn't get my facts straight before I answered that seemingly innocuous question. Might be worth letting the journo know so it doesn't make a third appearance...

No probs at all Grant, I'd assumed they wouldn't run it again so decided to leave it. Lesson learnt I guess. Thanks again for pimping us though. Now when are you going to get a real job in Silicon Beach ;)

Hey Brett, I was actually talking about web-based software companies in Cronulla, but I know you guys are doing some cool stuff. This is all the more impressive considering how close the beer taps are to your office.

Got anything to add?
